Project Information
Project: Feasibility study for Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum
Client: Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum
Location: Accrington
Scope: Feasibility
Status: Completed
The brief
Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum is a collective of almost 30 not-for-profit groups, coming together who believe that free access to good quality open space and leisure facilities could contribute to the social health and wellbeing of local residents. With the support of Hyndburn Borough Council, the Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum are looking to redevelop the growing areas behind Gatty Park.
The site currently accommodates a collection of polytunnels, a glazed greenhouse, and tarmacked external areas, but lacks suitable workshop/education space, welfare facilities, accessible parking arrangements, and sufficient storage.
We were commissioned to carry out a feasibility study to explore the potential of the site, overcome the level differences and create spaces that allow for a range of activities that support the core horticultural activities of the Hyndburn Green Spaces Forum.

Our Approach
The feasibility study explores the spatial, operational and planning considerations required to deliver a new Education & Community Hub, improved storage, glasshouses, raised beds, biodiversity enhancements, car parking re-design, and opportunities for sustainable energy generation. The study also assesses heritage implications relating to the Grade II listed Elmfield Hall and potential reuse of the derelict tank room.
The intention was to provide a clear, deliverable roadmap that retains the site’s community-led ethos while addressing functional shortcomings, improving accessibility, meeting planning obligations (including Biodiversity Net Gain), and supporting long-term resilience.
The feasibility study
Creates an inclusive, welcoming environment for all ages and abilities
Consolidates scattered functions into a coherent, accessible layout
Maximises opportunities for education, food growing and craft activities
Improves storage and circulation
Enhances biodiversity
Embeds sustainability through energy and water strategies
Respects the listed setting of Elmfield Hall
The feasibility study is currently being used as the basis to apply for further grant funding to develop the scheme further.
